Children In Crisis

Since members enjoyed doing Children in Crisis quilts last year, and they were so accepted and appreciated by the Sheriff's Office, we plan, for the 2010 community service project, to continue it as an ongoing effort.  Guild members are being asked to make quilts for donation to the Sheriff's Department as well as to other law enforcement entities.  These quilts will be carried by law enforcement officers and be available to be given to a child (or possibly an endangered senior) faced with an emergency situation such as a fire, or in connection with issues arising out of neglect or abuse.

We are setting two collection deadlines this year.  We will do the first collection and transfer of the quilts in November, so you have the rest of the spring and summer to be creative for this first collection.  Then we will do another collection and formal presentation in April!  Doing this as an ongoing project means if any of us have time and just want a reason to make a quilt or use up stash, we will have a good place and good use for our work.  From what Cpl Johann said when he and Sheriff Jenkins met with us last year, there is a substantial continuing need for these types of friendship gifts, so let's go to it!!

Please try to make your projects consistent with the following.  Contact Nancy Speck with any questions:  nspeck@comcast.net, 301-694-8121.

1.  Try for a neutral or child theme from infant or toddler up to pre-teen.

2.  Quilts can range in size from 36" x 36" to no larger than 54" x 54" and need not have a sleeve.

3.   Quilts should have a label.  Your submission can be anonymous, but should include the date and identify the quilt as a gift from the Clustered Spires Quilt Guild.

4.   As these quilts are intended for use by children or needy seniors, fabrics should be prewashed and the final product completely washable.  Also, since we cannot know whether a quilt will be given to a child with allergies, quilts that may have pet hairs on them should be washed before submitting.

Previous Community Service Projects:

Red Cross Quilt:

In addition to making quilts for Children in Crisis, the guild created a quilt for the Frederick Chapter of the American Red Cross.  Manuel Penalver photographed the Walkersville headquarters building and manipulated the image so that it could be cut into six strips which were provided to individual quilters.  Each quilter used her own favorite technique, fabric, etc. and the quilters did not collaborate with each other until the strips are all completed and the final quilt assembled.  The panels were made by Brenda Barnhardt, Kathy Shankel, Nancy Speck, Winnie McCarraher, Stella Penalver, and Sharon Price.  The quilt top was then quilted by Winnie McCarraher.
