2010 Row Robin

This year's challenge was a Row Robin.  In a typical Round Robin, one person makes a center block, passes it on to another who creates the first border and then passes it on to another for the second border and so on until the quilt is completed.   A Row Robin is similar, but each person makes a quilt row instead of a border.

In our Row Robin, participants were divided into groups of six and each person was issued a clean pizza box and notebook.  No discussion of the project was allowed so that everyone would be surprised to see how the finished quilts came out.  All rows were to be 36-inches wide (finished size), but the height of the row to be made each month varied according to a pre-determined set of instructions.  Some months, the row was to be 4" tall and another it would be 6", etc.

The first first month, each person made a 36-inch (finished size) row for their own quilt and wrote in the notebook what theme, color scheme, or any other criteria that they would like to see carried through the remaining rows of their quilt.  Some included fabrics or other items in their boxes as inspiration for the other participants in their group.  Each month, everyone brought their closed pizza box to the guild meeting and passed it on to the next person in their group.  As each person made that month's row, they wrote in the notebook so that, at the end of the project, the owner of the quilt had a diary of how their quilt came to be.

At the September meeting, everyone brought in their boxes, which now contained 6 rows.  The boxes were then returned to their original owners so that they could assemble the rows and bring their completed quilt top to the October meeting for the big reveal.

Pictures showing the reveal appear in the filmstrip below.  All pictures were taken by Jerry Losardo.
